Newspapers are folding daily. This is in part due to trends that are out of their control, mainly that people are getting their news online. But newspapers are also digging their own graves with their daily dose of negative headlines.
Yes, things are bad. But who wants to be reminded of that every morning at 7:00 am. Is dwelling on the negative helping us rebound in any way?
My wife and I get two newspapers delivered to our apartment door—or used to. We recently canceled them both and have noticed a significant improvement in our daily mood.
Our thoughts determine our feelings. If all we are exposed to is bad news, we’re all destined to feel lousy. That doesn’t seem like an ingredient to economic recovery.
The election of Obama in November taught us that people are tired of fear and negativity. They want hope. So let’s have a little impromptu election between two headlines and see if the same holds true. Vote for the headline you’d rather wake up to:
“Teen gunman who killed 16 at German school is slain by police”
or
“Woolworths Store Reopened as 'Wellworths', Former Staff Rehired”
Exit polls indicate Wellworths is headed for a landslide victory.
Newspaper journalists and editors have tremendous influence. They can shape our minds. And they can write about whatever they choose. It’s time they start using their ink in a more positive way.
Don't take it from me, take it from Bob Marley.
(Lyrics to "Positive Vibrations")
Live if you want to live
(rastaman vibration, yeah! positive!)
Thats what we got to give!
(ini vibration yeah! positive)
Got to have a good vibe!
(iyaman iration, yeah! irie ites!)
Wo-wo-ooh!
(positive vibration, yeah! positive!)
If you get down and you quarrel everyday,
Youre saying prayers to the devils, I say. wo-oh-ooh!
Why not help one another on the way?
Make it much easier. (just a little bit easier)
Say you just cant live that negative way,
If you know what I mean;
Make way for the positive day,
cause its news (new day) - news and days -
New time (new time), and if its a new feelin (new feelin), yeah! -
Said its a new sign (new sign):
Oh, what a new day!
Pickin up?
Are you pickin up now?
Jah love - jah love (protect us);
Jah love - jah love (protect us);
Jah love - jah love (protect us).
Rastaman vibration, yeah! (positive!)
Ini vibration, yeah! (positive!) uh-huh-huh, a yeah!
Iyaman iration, yeah! (irie ites!) wo-oo-oh!
*positive vibration, yeah! (positive!)
Pickin up?
Are you pickin up now?
Pickin up?
Are you pickin up now?
Pickin up? (jah love, jah love -)
Are you pickin (protect us!) up now?
Pickin up? (jah love, jah love -)
Are you pickin (protect us!) up now?
Pickin up? (jah love, jah love -)
